Basic Home Gym Buyers Guide

Whether you have a hectic work schedule or children, or your budget doesn’t allow it – setting up a designated area at home to work out decreases the chances of you skipping that workout. Here you will find the most “bang for your buck” items for your home gym.

The first 3 items listed are sold at most major retailers, such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon. Check out local resale shops, and online marketplaces for second-hand equipment.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are my top recommendation due to the inexpensive cost and the multitude of ways to utilize them in your training. Both the longer tube bands and the shorter glute bands can add intensity to a bodyweight program.

Dumbbells

Start off with two pairs of dumbbells, a light set (5-12.5 lbs) and a heavier set (25-45 lbs). Pairs of dumbbells would be the best option. However, a single dbs could provide benefits as well. They also sell adjustable dumbbells, which are great space-savers.

Kettlebells

Kettlebells are a great way to incorporate heavy resistance without taking up a lot of space. I suggest starting out with one light/moderate kb (20-30lb) and one heavy kb (30-50lb). If you can get them in pairs, even better!

Squat Rack, Barbell, Plates & Bench

If you have the space and want to create a long-lasting home gym, a squat rack with a barbell and plates will give you the most versatility and provide a way to hit all the classic lifts.
